Ndamukong "A Man Named" Suh

I know what you're thinking. How can a DT be considered for the Heisman? Or maybe you're thinking how do you say that name? Well to settle the latter question, you can call him Suh, House of Spears (the meaning of Ndamukong given to him by his father who hails from Cameroon) or you can just call him sir. But now to dealing with the former.

You can make a strong case there has been no more dominant player in college football up to this point. While Suh has been playing dominating football all season it took a Thursday night match-up on ESPN for most of the nation to understand just how good this guy is. Football, like every sport, is largely measured by statistics. It also is very rare for a defender to get the kind of recognition an offensive player gets. In terms of the Heisman you have to go back to 97 when Charles Woodson won to see a defender win and he played receiver and returned kicks. Suh is not going to get 20 sacks. He's not going to score many touchdowns. But he is going to be the best player on the field in every game he plays.

Watching the game against Missouri, it was painfully obvious that Missouri was helpless in trying to stop the big man. His stat line including a sack and forced fumble which was recovered by Nebraska, 6 tackles and an interception. As a DT. On the year he has 3 sacks, an interception, and he leads the team in tackles with 32. Not since the '70s had a DT led Nebraska in tackles until Suh did it last season. And he's doing it again. Even though every team knows they have to gameplan against him. What Suh does to disrupt an offense can't simply be measured by statistics, even though his stats are very impressive. He is relentless, he rattled Blaine Gabbert and was the first person to intercept Gabbert in his young career. Coming in to the game he had the #4 passer rating in the nation. Against Nebraska he completed less than 40% of his passes and threw the first two interceptions of the year, one to Suh. He was visibly rattled and for good reason. In the other big game for Nebraska this year Suh also dominated. While the team gave up a touchdown at the end to lose, Suh, still as a DT, had four pass deflections. He continually shut down the running game for Virginia Tech which was its strength coming in. Ultimately will Suh win? Probably not. But as an award for the most outstanding player in college football, he should at least be in New York because at this point of the season, that's exactly what he is.

I agree that Suh has basically no shot to win. But what he does to change games as a DT is something very rare in football. I would hope that he can at least get an invitation with the big name players putting up ok numbers thus far. I also agree that Dorsey was a bigger name, although I would argue that Suh is significantly better than Dorsey was. While Dorsey disrupted the game, he played with Tyson Jackson and Ricky Jean-Francois and other NFL talent in that D-line. While Pierre Allen, Barry Turner and Jared Crick are good, none is going to be the third overall pick like Jackson. Ultimately, my hope would be that if he continues to play as well as he has that he gets an invite and gets to New York. For him to do that I think Nebraska needs to win the Big 12 North and have him put pressure on Colt McCoy all game in the Big 12 Championship.

I would have to agree with everything you said. You should read Pat Forde's most recent article. He discusses how college football has been dominated by defense not offense this year and the most impressive players have been on the defensive side of the ball. He goes on to mention that Suh is the most impactful and dominant defensive player in the game.

You're right Suh is a freak who completely dominates the game and one way or another alters every play he is on the field. However, if Glenn Dorsey couldn't win it while he had the name recognition no DT will. Also, the tackles will mean nothing to voters because if you look at Trevor Laws from his senior year he had 112 tackles and he didn't even get all american mention. I do realize Suh is far better than laws and arguably the best defensive player in the country, but there is no way a DT wins the heisman.
