Jacory Harris

Well Jacory and Miami got a shot at a third straight ranked team as they traveled to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech this past weekend. What started as a potential boost into the top 5 not only hurt Jacory in the Heisman but set back the inevitable return of the U.

In the first two games of the season, Jacory was able to relax and sit behind his offensive line and pick apart the defense. However, the tenacious Virginia Tech defense, especially d-line featuring Jason Worlids, was able to create constant pressure on Harris. This caused much different types of numbers for Harris (150 yards, 36% completion, 0 TDs, 1 INT, -28 yards rushing with sacks included) as compared to his first two games. While playing a top 10 team in this kind of environment isn't easy, a performance like this in a big game is likely to knock most people out of the Heisman running, especially since Jacory was a sophomore longshot to start. However, it should be more troubling to the Canes as Nebraska was able to find relative success rushing the ball with their primary ball carrier Roy Helu gaining 169 yards and averaging 6 yards per carry against the same defense only a week earlier in a close 16-15 loss. Compared to the 31-7 rout that was dealt to Miami, this brings into question whether this Miami team is as good as previously thought. It also shows that without the ability to rush the ball the pressure lies on the QB, especially since Virginia Tech was able to jump to a quick lead and dominate special teams as well. Jacory is a young, very talented QB, and he has talent around him, but it seems that this team is not quite ready to emerge as a national power nor is Jacory as a national superstar. However, with a convincing victory against a very talented Oklahoma defense (#1 scoring defense, #5 total defense despite a loss) Jacory could make the voters forget about his performance in Blacksburg and reinvigorate the his campaign for Heisman.

Going into last weeks game at Virginia Tech, Miami was the most over-hyped team ever. Florida State is a marginal team and Georgia Tech, despite being awesome, is over ranked like the rest of that conference, excluding VT. Never has so much been made about an unranked team beating two teams that no one would consider to even be top 25 team going into week 3. Miami was considered under ranked at no. 9 and many had them in their top 5. I say all this to point out the fact that Jacory Harris' Heisman claims are completely unfounded and way overstated.

I disagree with the assessment that Georgia Tech is not a top 25 team. They have a dynamic attack and returned a great backfield from a very successful year last year. While they didn't return all the parts on defense, I think they can be competitive in that conference and warrant a top 25 ranking. Florida State is a very talented team looking for its identity. They put up a strong game against Miami, almost lost to Jacksonville St., destroyed BYU then once again underachieved being dominated by a Grothe-less South Florida squad. However I do agree that they should not be considered a top 25 team based on talent alone and beating BYU does not make up for their other performances. I do agree that the expectations and attention that was given to Miami and Jacory after those two games was overzealous. However in the eyes of the media and the mainstream public Jacory was mentioned as a Heisman candidate which makes him relevant for review on Jimmy Heisman. As the season progresses, our focus will shift to different, emerging, and sleeper candidates which means if Jacory lays an egg against Oklahoma, that'll probably be the last you'll hear about him on Jimmy Heisman.

Ha ha yea I know I was just trying to see if I could piss you and Andrew off before you guys realized it was andrews brother writing it. Unfortunately, he realized right away. Anyway, I agree about Georgia tech mainly because they are one of my favorite schools. But I do think Florida State, who happens to have the most over hyped coordinator in the country in Jimbo Fischer, and the ACC in general are overrated. So far this year they have beaten up on each other in conference play and been unimpressive in non-conference play, ironically the one major exception was FSU's win over BYU. A lot of people would say the same about the Big Ten but I wholeheartedly believe the Big Ten is better than the ACC.

I think by far the most impressive win was Virginia Tech's miraculous victory over a loaded Nebraska squad. Granted it took a miracle and a terrible breakdown by a Nebraska walk-on safety, but that clearly proved to me that Virginia Tech is a national championship contender. Even though it's obvious to any sports fan that if that game is played in the Sea of Red, Nebraska wins by 10, a win is a win and it showed me Virginia Tech is for real. I tend to agree the Big 10 is better top to bottom but I think Virginia Tech is better than any Big 10 team.
