The Case for Jimmy

As many ESPN viewers are aware, on Saturday night Lou Holtz tried to argue Mark May that Jimmy Clausen should be the front-runner for the Heisman. Luckily Reese Davis is a good judge and ignored May's absurd attempt to deflate Jimmy's stats and achievements. Much to the outrage of Mark May, Davis found that Jimmy is indeed at least one of the front-runners for the award.

I know that the other day my fellow blogger announced his top 5 Heisman candidates and that he had Tim Tebow as number 1. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure most of the country agrees with that. But those who have seen Jimmy play every week know why he is most deserving of the award. I won't focus on his stats, because most people know by now that Jimmy has the best passer rating in the nation. One of the main reasons that Tebow is a top Heisman candidate is that he is a great leader, and I think that Jimmy has become a great leader as well.

All of ND's last four games have come down to the final minutes, and the only reason that Jimmy hasn't gone 4 for 4 is because the defense let Tate Forcier and Michigan score after Jimmy had his come-from-behind scoring drive. When we got the ball at the end of the Washington game, my friend turned to me and said "My only concern is that we score too quickly." Irish fans don't only expect Jimmy to score a touchdown in a pressure situation, they know he will. And when the game went to overtime, the Irish scored on two plays. People would be correct in saying that a lot of the credit for Clausen's great stats on Saturday goes to Golden Tate for his incredible runs after the catch. But has anyone else noticed that every time Jimmy rolls to his right and throws the ball across the middle that the ball hits the receiver squarely in the numbers? One of the reasons Tate can get all those yards after the catch is because Jimmy hits him in stride, so Golden never slows down.

Tim Tebow is the best team leader in the nation, but he has only thrown 68 passes compared to Jimmy's 148 attempts. Simply put, ND has asked much more of Jimmy than Florida has of Tebow, and Jimmy has answered every time.
